To do scientific research in a University, you usually need to have a first degree in science (like a Bachelors or Masters degree) followed by a doctoral level qualification like a PhD. First degrees are ‘taught’ courses, not that different to being at school – you go to lectures, do homework, and sit exams at the end. PhDs are more like having a trainee job – you actually start to do research, with the help of your supervisor.
