A radar is an instrument. It has an antenna which sends out pulses of EM waves in the radio part of the spectrum. The waves will hit something and interact and the resultant energy be scattered in different directions, some of that will go back towards the radar, where it is picked up on the radar’s big dish.
The first radar was developed in the 1930s for detecting ships ad later aircraft. We know have weather radar to detect clouds and whether they are made out of rain or snow!
