There’s actually loads of oxygen in space, and we find it in star forming regions, and stars! Unfortunately this isn’t the type of oxygen we can breathe, so if we travelled into space and had a base on another planet, we’d have to find a way of creating oxygen or carrying it with us on the mission.
You might know that the Oxygen we breathe is O2 (lowercase 2), known as molecular Oxygen. In space, most the Oxygen exists as O (or atomic Oxygen) or is wrapped up with other elements, which we can’t breathe. It’s actual still a bit of a mystery to scientists why this is the case!

Are we not able to breathe oxygen in space because it’s surrounded by lots of other elements?
